Abstract:

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of training spirituality with emphasis on Islamic teachings on life quality in substance-dependent individuals. This study was a quasi-experimental research conducted in the form of pretest-posttest with control group. The statistical population included substance-dependent individuals referring to the center of methadone therapy in the city of Ghorveh (Nikoosalamat) in 2013. Ninety substance-dependent individuals were randomly selected. Among them, 30 individuals who had received the lowest scores on the Life Quality Inventory (WHOQOL) were randomly classified into experimental (n=15) and control (n=15) groups. The experimental group received 9 two-hour sessions of spirituality therapy, whereas the control group received no intervention. Experimental and control groups completed the WHOQOL in pretest-posttest. Data were analyzed by multivariable analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). Results showed that training spirituality with emphasis on Islamic teachings was significantly effective in improving life quality in substance-dependent individuals. Given to the importance of life quality in substance-dependent individuals, it is concluded that the addictive treatment centers can help increase life quality of these individuals by providing spiritual education.
